Nitric acid (HNO3), The pure compound is colorless, but older samples tend to acquire a yellow cast due to decomposition into oxides of nitrogen and water. Most commercially available nitric acid has a concentration of 68% in water. When the solution contains more than 86% HNO3, it is referred to as fuming nitric acid. Depending on the amount of nitrogen dioxide present, fuming nitric acid is further characterized as white fuming nitric acid or red fuming nitric acid, at concentrations above 95%.
Nitric acid is the primary reagent used for nitration – the addition of a nitro group, typically to an organic molecule. While some resulting nitro compounds are shock- and thermally-sensitive explosives, a few are stable enough to be used in munitions and demolition, while others are still more stable and used as pigments in inks and dyes. Nitric acid is also commonly used as a strong oxidizing agent.

Nitric Acid is a strong acid with chemical formula HNO3. It is also known as the spirit of niter and aqua fortis. In its pure form, it is colourless but as it gets older it turns into a yellow cast. This colour appears due to the decomposition of Nitric acid to oxides of nitrogen and water. It is highly corrosive and toxic. It causes severe skin burn. It reacts with hydroxides, metals, and oxides to form nitrate salts. The solution is also referred to as fuming nitric acid or strong nitric acid, depending on the amount of nitrogen dioxide present. At higher concentrations above 95%, Nitric Acid is differentiated toWhite fuming nitric acid or red fuming nitric acid.
Widely used in the manufacture of Organic Synthesis, Dyes, Drugs, Explosives, cellulose Nitrate, Nitrate salt, Nitro Benzene, Nitro Chloro benzene, Aniline, TDI and other Nitro Derivatives, Nitro Toluene, Acrylic Fibre, Dyestuff and Dye Intermediates, Photo Engraving, Oxidizer in Liquid Rocket Propellants, etc.
HNO3 is used as a strong oxidizing agent. It can be manufactured by the catalytic oxidation of ammonia. It is a common reagent used in laboratories and an important chemical used in industries to manufacture explosives and fertilizers. Due to low Nitrous and Iron content, it is ideally suited for Nitro-Glycerine based explosives and Nitro-Cellulose explosives manufacturing.
